Great fanfare for the 2nd UK Sikhlens Film Festival

Saturday 18th May 2024
Phoenix Arts Centre
Leicester

The 2nd Sikhlens Film festival brought in visitors from all around the country to celebrate Sikh film and arts. The mammoth day comprising over 30 films both short and long films mesmerised audiences throughout the day.

There were 4 major sessions our select films were the Restoring and preservation of heritage: the great work of Namita Jaspal as well as the restoration work of Gurdwara Chowa Sahib. Visitors were privileged to see the preview of Gurinder Singh Mann’s Sikh Scholar documentary which was well received by the participants (the full version will be shown at the Sikhlens festival in California in November).

There were scriptural recitations by Falcons Primary School and Music by Sonu and Sukhi – the celebrated singers brought foot tapping Punjabi Folk, Gazals and Quawalis. There were several stallholders including the artwork by Rajinder Singh Tattal Pentacularartist and the Sikhmuseum Initiatiative 3D Digital touchscreen, and ASMCollection. A large tapestry by the Manjeet Kauu was also on display.

The exclusive premier of Brexit India 1947 – a documentary by Bollywood producer Sanjivan Lal traced 290 years of British involvement in India. It was an interesting take on the draining of India’s resources by the British. The day ended with a dinner where participants interacted and networked.

Well done to Harinder Singh who worked tirelessly to bring this together and of course Bicky Singh CEO of Sikhlens USA. The festival was attended by people from across the UK including Lord Mayor of Leicester, Councillor Bhupen Dave and Lady Mayoress Mrs Usha Dave. Filming and photography by Punjab2000.
